  • Soldiers in line for Freedom

TWO groups of Notts soldiers will receive Freedom of the City at a ceremony next week.

Nottingham City Council is recommending the men and women of the 73rd Engineer Regiment (Volunteers) and the East Midlands Universities Air Squadron are given the honour on June 13. It will give the regiments the right to march through city streets on ceremonial occasions.

Michael Wildgust, Lord Mayor of Nottingham, said: "The city council, on behalf of the people of Nottingham, wants to recognise and foster the long and close links between the city and the regiments.

"Granting the Freedom of the City so that our regiments can march through Nottingham is one way we can show our appreciation and support to the Armed Forces, welcome local troops home from active operations and help raise the morale of the troops."

Lieutenant Colonel David Jones, commanding officer of the 73rd Engineer Regiment (Volunteers), and Flight Lieutenant Robert Marston of the East Midlands Universities Air Squadron will receive the certificates granting Freedom of the City from the Lord Mayor.

Lt Col Jones said: "We are now looking forward to the day when we are able to march through the city."

Flt Lt Marston said: "We are very proud of our connections with Nottingham."
